Lombard Odier Investment Managers (LOIM), a global wealth and asset manager, has announced the development of a new actively managed strategy geared at seizing opportunities in carbon markets worldwide.
Demand for carbon offset projects that counteract the release of greenhouse gases and related credits is anticipated to increase significantly over the next several years, as an increasing number of companies and businesses pursue net-zero ambitions and utilize offsets as a bridge to their own absolute emissions reduction efforts, or to balance emissions that are difficult to avoid.
Several initiatives have emerged to help scale the development of the carbon credit market, including the London Stock Exchange's launch of the first public markets capital raising solution for the voluntary carbon market last month and Salesforce's introduction of Net Zero Marketplace, a new carbon market built on its eCommerce platform in September. Last month, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange Limited (HKEX) also announced the opening of a carbon market.
The Head of Climate and Environmental Solutions at LOIM, Lorenzo Bernasconi, stated:
"We believe carbon markets are one of the most exciting investment opportunities presented by the climate transformation megatrend. Larger and more ambitious climate obligations cover over 90% of the global GDP, and an increasing proportion are legally obligatory. Carbon markets are a mission-critical policy instrument for satisfying government and business climate goals, yet they trade at a substantial discount to where they should be.
According to LOIM, its new Global Carbon Opportunity strategy will include pursuing upside participation in attractive risk/return opportunities globally, including difficult-to-access new and emerging carbon markets, and seeking quality alpha generation by capitalizing on market inefficiencies, all while promoting the net-zero and nature-positive transition. Additionally, the strategy will aggressively manage tail risk to safeguard against price shocks.
Callum Lee was recently appointed by LOIM as the Portfolio Manager of the strategy. Prior to joining LOIM, he was the Head PM of Global Carbon at Altana Wealth. Callum will collaborate with LOIM's Head of Climate and Environmental Solutions, Lorenzo Bernasconi, and Chief Carbon and Environmental Markets Strategist, Ruben Lubowski. The team will also have access to LOIM's Sustainability Research teams and an independent global Expert Advisory Board.
Co-Head of LOIM and Managing Partner at Lombard Odier, Jean-Pascal Porcherot, stated:
"At Lombard Odier, we believe that carbon markets will play a crucial role in driving the global economic transition towards a more sustainable future. Our Global Carbon Opportunity approach aims to capitalize on these market possibilities in order to promote the transition to net zero emissions and produce compelling sustainability-linked alpha for investors."
